Helen of Crete

Margaret treasures a certificate and a letter from the Greek Archbishop of Sydney congratulating her on her contribution to Greek culture for her story “Helen of Crete” written in 1998 for entry in the competition marking the Centenary of the Foundation of the Greek Orthodox Community of Sydney and New South Wales .

“Helen of Crete” is the tale of a young Greek girl, Helen, who travels to Crete with her mother. Helen resists the pressure of Greek culture but when she sees a painting at Knossos of a girl who closely resembles herself, feels herself to be a part of that ancient world.
